There’s probably no single piece of auto safety equipment that has a stronger role to play in your safety than a seat belt. For decades now, buckling up and making sure that everyone in your car is buckled up as well has been the most effective way to minimize the risk of serious injury in an accident.
When it comes to children, the risk of injury in a car accident is even more severe. Children should absolutely not be riding in a vehicle without being safely restrained in car seat systems or seatbelts depending on their age. Recently, celeb entertainer Mariah Caney was the subject of strong criticism after she posted a video on social media that appeared to show her children unrestrained while travelling in a moving car.
The singer took to her Instagram account, and posted the video that showed her with her 7 ½ year old twins belting out Christmas carols in the spirit of the season. However, what caught viewers’ eyes was not the adorable melody the twins were belting out, but the fact that they were not wearing seatbelts, and the car was clearly moving. The car was moving at a slow speed, but that didn’t appear to dampen the criticism against the singer for allowing her children to ride in a car without wearing seatbelts.
Parent shaming issues aside, any child safety advocate would insist that wearing seatbelts while travelling in a car is imperative, regardless of the speed of the car or the distance that you are travelling. Research has indicated that people do tend to skip on wearing seatbelts if they are travelling for a very short duration. The length of your trip, the sped of your car or the type of motor vehicle that you are travelling in should not be factors in your decision to wear a seatbelt.
Parents model good driving examples for their children, especially when they are at as impressionable an age as the Carey twins. Good habits that last a lifetime begin during childhood and a child who sees his parents strapped in safely, and ensuring that the children are bucked in as well is much more likely to adopt these safe driving practices as he gets older.
